Professor Afshin Samali

Investigator

Professor Afshin Samali is Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Apoptosis Research Centre at NUI Galway. His research is focussed on stress-induced cell death and in particular on Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) induced stress.

The response of cells to ER-induced stress has been implicated in many diseases including cancer and neurodegeneration. Professir Samali’s main research objectives are to uncover the molecular signalling pathways activated during ER stress, in particular, the unfolded protein response (UPR) and to apply this knowledge to human diseases.

Professor Samali’s research has potential implications for developing improved treatments for a wide range of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegeneration and inflammation, but his current focus in on applying his research to cancer.

Professor Samali is a member of the scientific board for Cancer Center Eugene Marquis - University of Rennes-1 (INSERM unit at Rennes) and also a panel member for INCa - French National Cancer Institute (Biological and basic sciences for Cancer research).

Professor Samali has published more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals with more than 21,000 citations, seven patent applications and one licencing agreements. He has co-founded three companies: Triskel Therapeutics Ltd focused on cancer therapeutics, Aquila Bioscience Ltd focused on developing biomarker, diagnostic and therapeutic solutions to improve human and animal health, and Cell Stress Discoveries Ltd, dedicated to the  to the creation of novel therapeutics in the field of endoplasmic reticulum stress disorders.

Professor  Samali is a co-founder of the Endoplasmic Reticulum Society and the current President, the editor of 3 journals and member of the editorial board of another 7 journals. He co-edited a book on “ER stress in Health and Disease”. He has managed large national/international projects, such as the EU FP6 project TRIDENT and he currently co-ordinates the H2020-funded TRAIN-ERS Innovative Training Network and INSPIRED Research Innovation and Staff Exchange Network.
