Professor Gearóid Ó Laighin is an Established Professor of Electronic Engineering at NUI Galway.

Prior to his appointment as Professor of Electronic Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway, Prof. Ó Laighin was a Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering and Assistant Dean, Research for the College of Informatics and Electronics at the University of Limerick.  He was also founding Director of the Biomedical Electronics Laboratory at UL. Professor Ó Laighin has a range of industrial experience including periods when he worked in United States as a Product Engineer of high-speed static RAMS at Integrated Device Technology, Inc., Salinas, California and as a Design Engineer of Complex Logic Products at Integrated Device Technology, Inc., Santa Clara, California from 1985 to 1990. 

Professor Ó Laighin is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (SMIEEE) and is a Fulbright Scholar. 

Professor Ó Laighin research interests are in Electronic Medical Device design with a focus on (i) the design of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) systems and their application to venous insufficiency and Parkinson's disease, (ii) kinematic sensing of human movement and (iii) the application of Usability Engineering & Human Factors to the design of medical systems and devices for home health applications.  He is also active in the commercialisation of his research activity.

Professor Ó Laighin has participated in a range of EU Framework 7 programs projects including REMPARK, WIISEL, FATE and E-NO FALLS and is currently active in the EU Horizon 2020 programme with the project DigiNew-B.
