Professor Madeleine Lowery

Professor Madeleine Lowery

Investigator

Madeleine Lowery leads a multidisciplinary research group in the area of Neuromuscular Systems at University College Dublin, where she is a Professor in the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Head of Subject for Biomedical Engineering.

Her research applies engineering principles, in particular mathematical modelling and advanced signal processing, to understand how the nervous system controls movement in health and disease. The overall aim of this research is to address fundamental questions in the control of human movement and to develop therapies and technologies to improve impaired motor function.

Professor Lowery has developed novel models of the neuromuscular system and physiological signals, with a particular focus on motor control, electromyography and electrical stimulation of nerves.  These models have been used in conjunction with advanced signal processing methods to understand how the human nervous system controls movement, and how it adapts to conditions such as fatigue and neuromuscular disorders.

Her research has been applied across a range of areas including the development of new methods for controlling multifunction prosthetic limbs, understanding and quantifying muscle fatigue, neuromuscular stimulation, and deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease.

Professor Lowery was awarded a European Research Council Consolidator Grant in 2014. Other recent awards include the Delsys Prize for Innovation in Electromyography and the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland Biomedical Sciences Section Conway Medal. She was a council member of the International Society of Electrophysiolgy and Kinesiology from 2008-2014.  In 2018, she was Chair of the XII Congress of the International Society of Electrophysiolgy and Kinesiology hosted in Dublin, and a member of the Local Scientific Committee of the 23rd Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science 2018.  Professor Lowery is a Principal Investigator in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics and a Funded Investigator in the CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices.

She authored 56 peer reviewed research articles in international journals, several invited book chapters and over 100 refereed international conference papers and abstracts.  She is a regular reviewer for over 20 international journals and for international funding agencies.
