Professor Peter McHugh
Professor Peter McHugh is the Established Professor of Biomedical Engineering at NUI Galway. His research focuses on applying computational and experimental mechanics to investigating medical devices, tissue and the interaction of tissue with implanted devices.
Prof. McHugh’s research activity has links with the local cardiovascular medical device industry, focusing on applying computational modelling and experimental testing techniques to the analysis and design of minimally invasive surgical devices. His group applies advanced modelling and analysis skills in order to understand the physical behaviour of biological materials, i.e. tissues and cells.
As a natural evolution of Prof. McHugh’s research activities, based on his background in micromechanics and his explorations in the area of biomedical engineering science, his research interests are currently focused on the following themes: Cardiovascular medical devices, cardiovascular tissue mechanics, and orthopaedic biomechanics.
Prof. McHugh was elected to membership of Royal Irish Academy, Ireland’s premier learned body of which election to membership is the highest academic honour in Ireland. He also received the Silver Medal of the Section of Bioengineering, Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (RAMI) in 2011 for his outstanding career contributions to bioengineering.
Prof. McHugh currently has over 290 publications and 7 book chapters. He has filed two invention disclosures and has one license agreement.
Prof. McHugh is the Associate Editor of two journals and serves on the editorial board of three. He serves as a referee for 30 journals and is a grant reviewer for 5 funding agencies.
