Professor Karen Hirschi holds a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Arizona. She is Alumni Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine​. She is Director of the UVA Developmental Genomics Center; Associate Director for Scientific Programs at the UVA Medical Scientist Training Program and an adjunct Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine & Baylor College of Medicine. She leads the Hirschi Lab which is specifically interested in the regulation of endothelial cell commitment, differentiation and cell cycle progression, and defining signaling pathways that modulate these processes. They also aim to understand how some endothelial cells acquire specialized functions, such as the generation and/or maintenance of multi-lineage stem/progenitor cells.
