Dr Dimitrios Zeugolis is Director of the Regenerative, Modular and Developmental Engineering Laboratory(REMODEL), lecturer in Biomedical Engineering (Biomaterials) at NUI Galway, Galway, Ireland and Visiting Professor at TEI of Epirus, Arta, Greece.
Dr Zeugolis's research group operates in the following four major areas:
(a) Bottom-up and top-down scaffold fabrication technologies for the development of implantable devices, which closely imitate the properties of native extracellular matrix assemblies;
(b) Medical device functionalisation, through incorporation of biophysical, biochemical and biological signals, to provide functional therapeutic interventions for the treatment of soft and hard tissue injuries and degenerative conditions;
(c) Modulation of the in vitro microenvironment to facilitate preservation of permanently differentiated cell phenotype and to direct differentiation of stem cells towards specific lineages, enabling development, wide acceptance and clinical translation of cell-based therapies and advanced therapy medicinal products;
(d) Development of scaffold and scaffold-free in vitro pathophysiology models for drug and gene screening purposes.
Dr Zeugolis is member elect of the Basic Science Education Committee of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). He is co-founder and currently President of the Matrix Biology Ireland (MBI), a learned society with the scope of promoting and consolidating knowledge and expertise in the extracellular matrix field in Ireland.
Dr Zeugolis has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and holds 2 patents. He was one of the co-founders of Vornia Biomaterials.
Dr Zeugolis is the Chair of EORS 2018, Ireland and TERMIS EU 2019, Greece
