Lokesh Joshi

Professor Lokesh Joshi is Director of the Glycoscience Research Group at NUI Galway, a Co-Director of CÚRAM and Vice-President for Research at NUI Galway. His principal focus of research is understanding the roles of glycans and lectins in health and diseases and developing novel technologies for glycomics.

Glycosylation is one of the most common and important protein modifications and plays a key role in receptor-ligand interactions since glycoconjugates such as proteoglycans, glycolipids, glycoproteins and GPI anchored proteins along with lectins are the major structural components of the extracellular matrix. His lab is developing lectin-mimics to be used ex vivo and in vivo for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The other major technology development in the lab is focused on microarrays composed of neoglycoproteins, natural glycoproteins and carbohydrate binding proteins. These technologies allow their lab to study healthy and disease conditions and identify glycomic differences that can be developed as potential biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets.

Clinical targets of his research are: cancer, infectious diseases, gut-microbial interactions, respiratory diseases, immune-disorders.

Prof. Joshi has been involved in two spin out companies: Arizona Engineered Therapeutics (AzERx), 2003. NIH and VC sources funded AzERx to develop peptide-based therapeutics for vascular applications. AzERx was acquired by Orthologic (Now Capstone Therapeutics) in 2006 and Aquila Bioscience, 2012. Aquila Bioscience is a healthcare company working on various projects funded by EI, EU, European Defence Agency and private industries.

Prof. Joshi has published more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, over 75 research articles and 7 book chapters.

Prof. Joshi is an SFI-Stokes Professor of Glycosciences and the Irish representative on European Universities Association’s Research Programme Working group. He is on the editorial board of 3 journals, referees 24 journals, a grant panellist/reviewer, has delivered 24 keynote lectures, 12 plenary lectures and participated in 62 invited talks.
