Dr Cantillon-Murphy is a lecturer in electrical engineering at University College Cork, principal investigator at the BioDesign Laboratory and holds a visiting faculty appointment at the Institute for Image Guided Surgery, Strasbourg. His research interests include medical device design and electromagnetic devices for minimally invasive and image-guided interventions.
Dr Cantillon-Murphy leads an interdisciplinary research group focused on image guided interventions in surgery and endoscopy, as well as novel medical device design and development. The laboratory is currently developing a novel robotic catheter tracking platform, using the first open-source electromagnetic tracking platform, Anser EMT, developed by the laboratory. The group also built the world’s first open-source virtual bronchoscopy platform using the 3DSlicer environment. Dr Cantillon-Murphy has extensive experience in magnetic devices for therapy and one example is the SAMSEN self-deployed magnetic assembly for transluminal access in gastrointestinal surgery. The laboratory has also developed a number of new hand-held devices, including SecuRetract, a laparoscopic bowel retraction device.
The laboratory is currently focussed on image-guided navigation for airway diseases such as lung cancer. However, it also works with clinical collaborators in gastroenterology, surgery and interventional radiology.
Dr Cantillon-Murphy is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a former Marie Curie fellow (2010-2014), and a former MIT Whitaker fellow (2007-2008). He serves on the steering committee of the International Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (iSMIT) and has served as a peer-review expert for multiple international funding agencies including the European Commission, Norway Grants and EPSRC in the UK.
Dr Cantillon-Murphy has published over 40 international peer-reviewed journal publications and over 25 peer-reviewed conference proceedings. He has five patent filings and one granted international patent.
Dr Cantillon-Murphy has served as a reviewer for multiple international journals including IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroeletrics and Frequency Control, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics; Surgical Innovation; and Sensors.
