Dedicated to the development of novel cardiovascular stents through surface biofunctionalisation

Abstract

The Consortium is funded under the Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) instrument. It brings together four academic Partners – NUI Galway, Wrocław Medical University, Wrocław University of Technology, and Comenius University, Bratislava – and one industry – stent manufacturer, Balton Sp. z.o.o. – with synergistic core competencies in protein engineering, interventional cardiology, and materials design, manufacturing and marketing. The overall technological goal of the Consortium is to develop a biomimetic cardiovascular stent prototype that will exhibit reduced re-narrowing of arteries and improved clinical performance. This will be achieved by surface functionalisation of existing stents using engineered human antibody fragments. The work programme will be carried out by newly hired researchers and through a schedule of inter-sectoral secondments designed to facilitate researcher training and maximise transfer of knowledge and expertise between Partners.
