Our major interest lies in expressing and engineering recombinant proteins for medical device (bio)functionalisation. This can involve production of two types of multi-functional biomolecules: incorporating ion channel-blocking peptides, to treat chronic pain; or containing antimicrobial peptides, to coat device surfaces in order to prevent biofilm formation. Proteins are designed with fused moieties, such as antibody fragments or peptides, for tethering to solid surfaces or to delivery vehicles. Expression of the fusion proteins in E. coli is followed by characterisation of their biological properties and evaluation of their protective activities.
