Stroke Diagnosis and Treatment
Prof Doyle is a Professor in Physiology and Principal Investigator. Her research involves studying the causes of neurovascular stress and investigating novel strategies to protect brain tissue from damage due to stroke.
Prof Doyle’s research is in the area of acute ischemic stroke and vascular dementia. Prof Doyle’s research group is investigating the characteristics of human blood clots that cause occlusive strokes to inform medical device design and the discovery of novel biomarkers to advance stroke diagnosis and treatment. Prof Doyle has supervised numerous undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral research projects and has published widely in internationally peer reviewed publications.
Prof Doyle was the founder and first Director of the Galway Neuroscience Centre (2004 – 2009) and Vice Dean for Graduate Studies in the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences, University of Galway (2011–2015). She is a former President of Neuroscience Ireland (2021–2024), and a former member of the Governing Council of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS; 2021 – 2024) and the Governing Council of International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO; 2021 – 2024). Prof Doyle is currently a member of the FENS Committee for Higher Education & Training (2022 – present) and is on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Stroke and PlosOne. She is a previous recipient of the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in University of Galway (2015), winner of a National Teaching Experts Award (2015), from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (in Ireland) and winner of the University of Galway Future Research award for Industry Engagement (2024).
