Speaker: Marc Fernández-Yagüe
Location: Biomedical Sciences Building, University of Galway
Date: Thursday, 19th February 2026
Dr Marc A. Fernández-Yagüe is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Chemistry at Queen Mary University of London, where he leads the CREATION Lab (Cellular Reprogramming Through Mechanotransduction). His research focuses on understanding how physical cues from the extracellular matrix regulate cellular behaviour, particularly in stromal and immune cells, and on leveraging biomaterials to probe and modulate these mechanotransduction pathways. By integrating mechanobiology with engineered material platforms, he aims to create cell-instructive environments that bridge fundamental signalling mechanisms with translational models of tissue remodelling and fibrosis.
Marc obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Galway and subsequently held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship spanning Germany and the United States, including appointments at Georgia Tech and the Leibniz Institute for New Materials. He is the recipient of a 2025 ERC Starting Grant and multiple international awards in biomaterials and bioengineering, and currently leads collaborative projects supported by the RSC, UKRI, and EU programmes.
In partnership with CÚRAM, his current research efforts focus on establishing biomaterials-based platforms to study mechanotransduction and therapeutic response in health and disease, particularly immune-mediated fibrotic disorders.
The seminar is hosted by Abhay Pandit.
