A New Understanding of Cannabinoids as Therapeutics

Speaker: Randy Mrsny

Location: Biomedical Sciences Building, University of Galway

Date: Thursday, 19th March 2026

Randy Mrsny holds a professorship at the University of Bath. His research focuses on:

  • Mechanisms controlling the trans-epithelial migration of neutrophils
  • Regulation of tight junction structure and function
  • Pancreatic duct cell inflammation and oncogenesis
  • Events that control the fate of biopharmaceuticals injected into the subcutaneous or intramuscular space

Randy started his professional career at ALZA corporation in Palo Alto, CA where he was the Head of the Peptide Biology Group. He next moved to Genentech in South San Francisco, CA to lead the Drug Delivery/Biology Group. Upon leaving Genentech, Randy became the Founder and CSO of Trinity BioSystems in Menlo Park, CA and took a part-time post as Professor of Drug Delivery/Biology in the School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University. He next took on the role of Founder and CSO of Unity Pharmaceuticals in Menlo Park, CA, and founded Applied Molecular Transport (AMT) in South San Francisco, CA.

Randy received a BS degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics from the University of California at Davis (UCD) in 1977 where he was a California State Scholar and National Science Foundation grant recipient. In 1982, he received a PhD degree in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology from the UCD School of Medicine, where he was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) pre-doctoral fellow. From 1982-1985 he was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the University Oregon Institute of Molecular Biology where he examined quantitative biophysical parameters of lipid-protein binding dynamics for integral membrane proteins.

Prof. Mrsny has been elected Co-Chair for the Gordon Conference on Drug Carriers in Biology and Medicine and serves on study sections and scientific advisory board. He has been elected president of the Controlled Release Society, selected to its College of Fellows, and received its Founders Award. In 2015 and 2016, Randy was selected to be on the Medicine Maker 100 power list.

The seminar is hosted by Abhay Pandit.
