Osteoarthritis and low back pain are leading causes of disability worldwide, leading to substantial pain and decreased mobility, with significant impacts on individuals’ quality of life. However, despite the debilitating effects, current treatments are inadequate and fail to tackle the pathogenesis. In her presentation, Prof. Le Maitre will discuss how we can exploit knowledge on disease pathogenesis to develop new therapeutic approaches to tackle and hopefully one day cure these conditions.
Professor Christine Le Maitre co-leads the Osteoarthritis and Disc research group in the Division of Clinical Medicine at the University of Sheffield’s Medical School. Her research investigates the pathogenesis of musculoskeletal disorders, with a particular focus on intervertebral disc degeneration and osteoarthritis. Utilising this improved understanding of pathogenesis to develop novel therapies targeting pathogenesis and regenerative approaches. Working collaboratively nationally and internationally with clinicians, scientists, engineers, industrial partners and patients to develop the next generation of therapies. Her research to date has led to 2 patents, >120 publications, >£25 million in research income a current H index of 50 and i10 index 92 with over 10,600 citations on her articles to date. She has supervised 25 PhD students to completion and currently supervises 7 further doctoral students. She has received several accolades for her doctoral supervision and mentoring roles.
