Irish volunteer organisation, Thriveabetes, will host an event on Saturday September 19th for those who wish to learn more about living with diabetes and it will include a screening of the documentary, Imperfect Days, and panel discussion with the participants and figures depicted in the film as well as an exhibition of companies that provide diabetic technologies.

Directed by Dave Qualter and produced by Laura Qualter of Prospect Films, the documentary shines a light on the day to day lives of people living with diabetes while also exploring the crucial role of clinical trials in advancing treatment of the metabolic disease and improving quality of life. The film was recently awarded an Honourable Mention in the Best Short Film category at the SCINEMA International Science Film Festival 2026 in Australia.

The discussion panel will include film participants Carmel McDonagh, Tony Marshall and Faye Burke, who live with diabetes, along with Faye’s mum, Karen. They will be joined by University of Galway clinicians, Professor Fidelma Dunne and Dr Christine Newman to discuss how clinical trials are contributing to advances in diabetes research, treatment and care in Ireland.

The documentary was produced through funding from the Health Research Board through the HRB Diabetes Collaborative Clinical Trial Network and created as part of the Science on Screen initiative, founded by CÚRAM, the Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices (now Rinn Medical Devices), and Ardán, with the support of Research Ireland. The initiative has produced ten documentaries over the past decade, reaching audiences of almost two million people worldwide.
