Manufacturing of plastic microfluidic devices: the development trend, manufacturing chains and advanced applications in healthcare

Speaker: Nan Zhang

Location: Biomedical Sciences Building, University of Galway

Date: Wednesday, 6th August 2025

CÚRAM and the LifETIME CDT Programme are pleased to host a seminar featuring Dr Nan Zhang, Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University College Dublin.

Dr Zhang’s research focuses on polymer micro/nano manufacturing, atomic-scale fabrication, precision-engineered plastic microfluidic chips, nanomedicine, and diagnostic technologies. He has published over 80 articles in top-tier journals such as Materials Today and the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture and holds multiple PCT patents, several of which have been successfully commercialised.

In this seminar, Dr Zhang will explore the latest trends in the manufacturing of polymer-based microfluidic devices, focusing on advanced additive microfabrication using Digital Light Processing (DLP). He will present recent breakthroughs from his research group, such as the development of self-lubricating micro/nano mould technology for defect-free, high-fidelity production. The talk will conclude with case studies showcasing innovative applications of polymer micro/nano manufacturing in advanced diagnostics and nanomedicine.

All are welcome to attend.
