David Brayden

David Brayden (University College Dublin) has established a critical mass of drug delivery expertise in Ireland and led the SFI Irish Drug Delivery network from 2008-2013. His major research interests are in oral, buccal, and intra-articular peptide delivery using permeation enhancers, nanotechnology, and drug-device combinations.

His research encompasses how drugs transport across epithelial surfaces of the body, ranging from regions of the intestine to the buccal surface.  From this, formulations and drug-device combinations can be synthesised, characterised, and tested in in vitro and in vivo bioassays.  He has established programmes on intestinal permeation enhancers, nanoparticle formulations for oral and intra-articular administration, and use of high content analysis in respect of toxicology of polymers and excipients used in drug delivery.  His research is focused on clinical applications in Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis and Hypertension.

Current research interests include:

• Improving peptide delivery across intestinal epithelia using in vitro and in vivo bioassays
• Polymeric peptide conjugates for long-acting injectables
• Nanoparticle transport across Peyer’s patch M cells for oral vaccines
• Interaction of human and veterinary drugs with efflux transporters
• Nanoparticles formulations for intra-articular injection for osteoarthritis
• Nanoparticles for oral delivery of nutraceuticals and micronutrients

Brayden was the Director of the Irish Drug Delivery Research Network from 2007-2013. He completed a role as Deputy Coordinator of an EU 7th Framework grant on oral nanomedicines (www.TRANS-INT.eu), 2012-2017. He received a Hippocrates Award from the American Biographical Institute (2012) for services to biomedical research. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Controlled Release Society for services to its Board of Scientific Advisors. In 2012, he was the first Irish academic inducted into the College of Fellows of the Controlled Release Society. In 2014, he received an award for service to research from the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine. In 2017, he became the first Irish academic to be elected as a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who®.

Brayden is the author or co-author of multiple publications and patents. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Drug Discovery Today, European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In 2017 he became a Senior Associate Editor of Therapeutic Delivery.

In addition; he works as an independent consultant for drug delivery companies and has provided expert pharmacology opinions in veterinary practice legal cases.
