Prof Abhay Pandit Elected as Member of Royal Irish Academy

Prof Abhay Pandit, Founding Director of CÚRAM, Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices at University of Galway has just been elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA).

Founded by Charter in 1785, the RIA works to advance learning and scholarship in Ireland by championing Irish academic research and promoting awareness of how science, social science, and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society.

One of the principal roles of the Academy is to identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. Prof  Pandit is an Established Professor of Biomaterials at University of Galway and the founding director of CÚRAM, a multi-disciplinary academic-industry-clinician medical device research centre funded through Research Ireland. His research merges insights from biological paradigms with material science to create novel approaches for addressing chronic disease.

He has published in esteemed journals, including Science Translational Medicine, PNAS, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Biomaterials, and other notable high-impact publicationsHe has been honored with the prestigious George Winter Award 2022 by the European Society for Biomaterials, the Chandra P Sharma Award 2023 from the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Internal Organs (India), and the Biomaterials Advances Innovation Award 2023 (Biomaterials Advances Journal) in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of biomaterials research. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), the Irish Academy of Engineering, and the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE). He has served two terms on the councils of the European Society for Biomaterials and TERMIS. Previously, he held the position of Chair of TERMIS-EU and is currently the President Elect of TERMIS (Global).

He has successfully coordinated seven European Union projects, engaged in multiple collaborative discovery projects with industry partners, and served on advisory boards of multiple academic research centres globally. Prof Pandit has a strong commitment to raising the public understanding of science, supporting an award winning public engagement programme at CÚRAM that facilitates and supports patient and public involvement in research.

Professor Pandit is one of three University of Galway professors that have been elected as members of the Royal Irish Academy in 2025 for their exceptional contribution to sciences, humanities and social sciences.
