The following resources have been developed by post-primary school teachers in collaboration with CÚRAM researchers to help you bring current into the classroom.
Stem Cells –
Students learn how stem cells are involved in regeneration. Students play our STEMinator card game to learn all about different kinds of stem cells that are
in the body.
The Musculoskeletal System –
Students learn about bones, muscles, tendons, and how doctors currently treat damage to these tissues. Students construct a model hand and act as surgeons to fix a tendon using a Biomedical Engineering Kit.
The Brain –
Students learn how nerves send and receive messages, and the causes of Parkinson’s disease. Students build medical devices to treat Parkinson’s disease and test the devices on jelly “brains”.
The Circulatory System –
Students learn about blood vessels, blood flow through the heart, and medical conditions that can affect the circulatory system. Students play a “Guess Who”-style game to develop an awareness of how medical devices are designed to treat diseases of the circulatory system.
Biomaterials –
Students learn about medical devices, and natural and synthetic sources of biomaterials. Students play a card game to put the development of medical devices into context with historical events.
The Effects of Exercise on the Heart and Blood Vessels –
Students learn how exercise makes the heart stronger to pump more blood with less effort. Students also learn how Irish researchers are creating new ways to image blood vessels to detect and treat vascular diseases.
The Effects of Exercise on the Brain –
Students learn how certain exercises create new neural pathways in the brain. Students also learn how Irish researchers are developing new approaches to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
The Effects of Exercise on the Bones –
Students learn how exercises that apply forces against bones stimulate bone cells to build up bone density. Students also learn how Irish researchers are designing new treatments for osteoporosis.
The Effects of Exercise on the Blood –
Students learn how exercise keeps blood vessels healthy by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Students also learn how Irish researchers are developing new strategies to treat blood clots in stroke patients.
