Successful MedDevDoc Mid-Term Review Highlights Progress in EU-Funded Medical Device Doctoral Training Programme

January 30th, 2026:

The MedDevDoc Mid-Term Review was held this week on January 27 at the University of Galway, marked an important milestone for this EU-funded medical device research and doctoral training programme. Coordinated by Professor Abhay Pandit, the event welcomed representatives from the European Research Executive Agency (REA), including Project Officer Jozse Mikita and Programme Manager Dr Najmeh Abtahi, as well as principal investigators and doctoral fellows from partner institutions across Ireland.

The review underscored the distinctive opportunities MedDevDoc provides to early-stage researchers working at the interface of engineering, life sciences, and clinical application. The programme promotes strong collaboration between academia, industry, and healthcare stakeholders, ensuring that research activities are both scientifically robust and closely aligned with unmet clinical needs.

In addition to advancing innovative research, MedDevDoc places significant emphasis on structured professional and career development. Doctoral fellows receive comprehensive training in entrepreneurship, science communication, regulatory affairs, and career planning. Industry secondments further enhance cross-sector mobility, while public and patient engagement initiatives support researchers in understanding the broader societal and healthcare context of their work.

MedDevDoc represents more than a doctoral training programme; it is a multidisciplinary training environment designed to equip future leaders in medical technology with the skills required to develop devices that are technologically advanced, clinically relevant, economically sustainable, and socially responsible.

Through targeted European investment, MedDevDoc demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and structured doctoral training in driving impactful healthcare innovation. As a programme supported under Horizon Europe, MedDevDoc is contributing to a strengthened framework for collaborative medical device research and researcher development across Europe.

This project has received €6.7 million in funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Excellent Science programme under Grant Agreement No. 101126640, and is supported in part by CÚRAM, the Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices (Grant Reference 13/RC/2073_P2).
