Successful Spring-School for NO-CANCER-NET Network

March 28th 2025:

Last week saw the completion of the first and very successful Spring School for our NO-CANCER-NET MSCA DN network. Led by CÚRAM PI Prof Sharon Glynn at University of Galway, NO-CANCER NET is a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network Training programme that is addressing unmet medical need for Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC).

TNBC is an aggressive form of breast cancer that accounts for more than 10 % of cases, often affecting younger patients. Within just 2-3 years, approximately 30 % of those diagnosed develop incurable distant metastases. Despite ongoing research, treatment remains limited to surgery and chemotherapy.

One promising avenue involves nitric oxide (NO) signalling, which plays a dual role in tumour progression. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the NO-CANCER-NET project harnesses this knowledge to develop therapies by targeting inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). It will train researchers in tumour biology, drug development, and computational analysis, bridging the gap between laboratory research, industry, and clinical application.

The network is training 10 doctoral candidates (DCs) across 6 European countries and 9 institutions to equip them with the interdisciplinary expertise required to develop new therapeutics and diagnostics for areas of unmet clinical need. The four-day summer school brought together DCs and PIs to discuss the progress of ongoing research and provide feedback and training for all candidates.

Ends.
